SENSOR NOISE, LOW LIGHT & REAL TIME

Real-Time Object Recognition Under High Sensor Noise and Low Light

Low illumination changes the statistics of sensor measurements, while motion and exposure can weaken useful image structure. Robust perception needs to distinguish true geometry from artifacts rather than rely on ideal images.

The engineering question

Low illumination changes the statistics of sensor measurements, while motion and exposure can weaken useful image structure. Robust perception needs to distinguish true geometry from artifacts rather than rely on ideal images.

How to approach the problem

Understand the capture pipeline

Exposure, analog and digital gain, rolling shutter and compression can each affect the features available to an embedded vision algorithm.

Use complementary spatial cues

Color, local structure, contour orientation and temporal persistence can be informative, but each can also fail in challenging scenes.

Benchmark robustness instead of assuming it

Record controlled illumination levels, motion conditions, power draw and error distributions on representative hardware.

Evaluation checklist for an R&D team

  • How does performance change with exposure and gain?
  • Is latency measured end to end including camera input?
  • Are failure cases documented and reproducible?
