Real-Time SLAM on Resource-Constrained Embedded Systems

Visual SLAM brings together feature extraction, tracking, motion estimation and map maintenance. A compact CPU-based system imposes strict memory, bandwidth and latency limits, and the feasibility varies substantially by hardware class.

The engineering question

Visual SLAM brings together feature extraction, tracking, motion estimation and map maintenance. A compact CPU-based system imposes strict memory, bandwidth and latency limits, and the feasibility varies substantially by hardware class.

How to approach the problem

Decompose the compute budget

Profile acquisition, feature extraction, matching, map updates and display separately. Resolution, motion and platform determine which step dominates.

Control drift and ambiguity

Short-term visual continuity does not by itself establish a robust 3D map. Camera calibration, motion models, scale ambiguity and loop closure need engineering attention.

Choose realistic targets

A microcontroller and a Linux single-board computer have different capabilities. Do not assume that a full SLAM stack runs at real-time rates on a bare MCU.

Evaluation checklist for an R&D team

  • What frame rate, power and peak RAM budget is available?
  • How much camera motion and scene texture can be assumed?
  • What reference trajectory and drift measure will be used?
