Technical research note: engineering considerations, not a published benchmark, peer-reviewed paper or claim of certified performance.
The engineering question
Annotation is costly, but a system cannot be judged only by the number of labels used during training. Unsupervised anomaly detection, self-supervised representation learning and object recognition solve related but distinct problems.
How to approach the problem
Separate learning objectives
An anomaly detector identifies departures from a reference distribution. A recognizer associates observations with object identities or categories. Avoid presenting these tasks as equivalent.
Structure-first research
Vimberia is investigating persistent structural representations that could reduce reliance on manually labeled examples while retaining continuity across frames.
Validate with held-out scenarios
Evaluation still needs independent reference observations, failure cases, sensor changes, class imbalance and explicit acceptable error rates.
Evaluation checklist for an R&D team
- Which parts of the pipeline truly require labels?
- How does the model behave under domain shift?
- Can results be reproduced across devices and lighting?
