Multispectral Camera Integration for Autonomous Ground Robot Perception

Different sensing modalities reveal different properties of the scene. Combining them can provide complementary information, but requires alignment, calibration and careful latency management.

The engineering question

Different sensing modalities reveal different properties of the scene. Combining them can provide complementary information, but requires alignment, calibration and careful latency management.

How to approach the problem

Start with the sensor interface

Check exposure controls, synchronization, bit depth, spectral response and pixel format before designing fusion.

Calibrate spatial alignment

Cross-camera and cross-spectral features are not guaranteed to correspond. Baselines, optics and registration error matter.

Budget for synchronization and memory

Data copying and fusion can dominate low-power deployments; the benefit must be measured against the extra processing cost.

Evaluation checklist for an R&D team

  • Which spectral bands are actually needed?
  • How will images be synchronized and calibrated?
  • How will sensor failures and missing channels be handled?
